Battle of Agua Zarca

Significance

The Battle of Agua Zarca, fought on November 5, 1819, resulted in a royalist victory over insurgent forces under General Vicente Guerrero in the outskirts of Agua Zarca, Guerrero. Despite the defeat, Guerrero evaded capture by jumping off a cliff and concealing himself in the surrounding mountain range — terrain that would continue to shelter insurgent resistance in the region. The engagement underscores the pattern of the late Mexican War of Independence in the south, where royalist forces could win engagements without decisively eliminating insurgent leadership, and where local geography repeatedly enabled commanders like Guerrero to survive and sustain the rebellion.
