Battle context
The Baltic Offensive was the Soviet military campaign conducted by the northern Red Army fronts against German Army Group North across the Baltic States in autumn 1944. Its principal result was the isolation and encirclement of Army Group North in the Courland Pocket, effectively removing a substantial German force from mobile operations on the Eastern Front. Soviet forces also re-occupied the Baltic States as a consequence of the campaign. The operation was significant enough in Soviet strategic terms to be designated one of Stalin's ten blows — the select list of major offensive operations highlighted in Soviet propaganda as decisive contributions to the defeat of Germany.
