2024 Syrian opposition offensives

Overview

On 27 November 2024, a coalition of Syrian revolutionary factions called the Military Operations Command, led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and supported by allied Turkish-backed groups in the Syrian National Army (SNA), launched an offensive against the Ba'athist regime's armed forces in Idlib, Aleppo and Hama Governorates in Syria. It initially began as a localised offensive targeting towns in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside, later evolving into a nationwide campaign that culminated in the regime's collapse.

Significance

On 27 November 2024, the Military Operations Command—led by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and supported by Turkish-backed Syrian National Army factions—launched an offensive against Ba'athist regime forces across Idlib, Aleppo, and Hama Governorates. What began as a localised push into towns in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside expanded into a nationwide campaign. The offensive ultimately culminated in the collapse of the Ba'athist regime, making it one of the most consequential actions of the Syrian Civil War's later phase. Despite the opposition fielding roughly 15,000 fighters against a nominally far larger regime force of 170,000, the campaign's momentum proved sufficient to bring down the government that had prosecuted the war since 2011.
