Battle context
The 1975 Spring Offensive — formally the General Offensive and Uprising of Spring 1975 — was the final North Vietnamese campaign of the Vietnam War and produced the capitulation of South Vietnam. What began as a limited cross-border operation from Cambodia, seizing Phước Long Province by January 1975, expanded rapidly after that success prompted the North Vietnamese leadership to widen the offensive's scope. The subsequent attack into the Central Highlands from Cambodia in March, culminating in the fall of Buôn Ma Thuột on 18 March, accelerated a collapse that the PAVN leadership had originally planned to prepare the ground for a general offensive only in 1976. The speed of South Vietnamese disintegration compressed a projected multi-year campaign into weeks, ending the war more than a year ahead of North Vietnamese planning assumptions and dissolving the Republic of Vietnam entirely.
