Ridda Wars

The Battle of Yamama was a central engagement of the Ridda Wars, the series of campaigns launched by the first caliph Abu Bakr to suppress rebellions and apostasy movements across the Arabian Peninsula following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. The battle was fought in the region of al-Yamama against the Banu Hanifa, whose leader Musaylima had claimed prophethood and posed one of the most formidable challenges to Rashidun authority. The Rashidun force of some 10,000 faced an opposing force estimated between 40,000 and 100,000, and the engagement unfolded across multiple phases in the plains of Aqrama and the city of Al-Hadiqat. Rashidun casualties of approximately 1,200 included numerous companions of the Prophet, while Banu Hanifa losses were recorded between 10,000 and 21,000. The concentration of senior commanders on the Rashidun side — including Khalid ibn al-Walid, Ammar ibn Yasir, and several prominent early Muslim figures — reflects the strategic priority Abu Bakr assigned to the Yamama theater. The battle's outcome effectively broke the power of Musaylima's movement and was decisive in consolidating Rashidun control over the peninsula during the Ridda Wars.
