World War II in the Balkans

Battle context

The Balkans campaign opened with the Italian invasion of Greece on 28 October 1940 and expanded significantly in early 1941 when Italy's offensive stalled and Greek forces counter-attacked into Albania. Germany intervened to support its ally, deploying forces to Romania and Bulgaria and preparing to strike Greece from the east. Britain simultaneously committed troops and aircraft to bolster Greek defenses, turning a bilateral Italo-Greek conflict into a broader multinational contest. A coup in Yugoslavia on 27 March 1941 prompted Hitler to extend operations to include that country, widening the theater further. The campaign drew in Axis forces totaling approximately 565,000 against some 430,000 Allied personnel under commanders spanning Italian, German, Hungarian, Greek, Yugoslav, and British Commonwealth commands, reflecting the scale of the strategic commitment required to consolidate Axis control over southeastern Europe.
