Battle context
The Vicksburg campaign was directed at securing Union control of the Mississippi River by capturing the fortress city of Vicksburg, the last major Confederate stronghold on the waterway. Grant's Army of the Tennessee defeated Pemberton's forces and took the city, severing the Confederacy's ability to use the river as a corridor for men and materiel. Control of the Mississippi had been a central Union strategic objective in the Western Theater, and the fall of Vicksburg denied the Confederacy its remaining hold on that axis, effectively splitting the Confederate states along the river.
