Battle context

The Trebizond Campaign extended Russian gains from the Erzerum Campaign, translating a major inland victory into control of Trabzon, a strategically positioned Black Sea port. The capture of Trabzon on the night of April 15, 1916, following operations that began on February 5, represented a significant territorial advance in the Caucasus theater, depriving the Ottoman Empire of a key logistical and coastal position. The campaign demonstrated the capacity of Russian forces under Yudenich to coordinate naval and land operations, pressuring Ottoman defenses along multiple axes simultaneously. The abandonment of Trabzon by Ottoman troops under Vehip Pasha marked the effective collapse of resistance in the region at that stage of the war, consolidating Russian dominance over a broad stretch of northeastern Anatolia.
