Battle context

The Tawori attack resulted in the deaths of over seventy Burkinabè soldiers and thirty-two civilians, making it one of the deadlier single engagements of the jihadist insurgency in Burkina Faso. The assault, carried out by Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin in Tapoa Province, demonstrated the continued operational capacity of GSIM-affiliated forces to strike conventional military units at scale in the country's east. The civilian massacre that followed the military engagement underscored the dual character of such attacks in the insurgency, combining combat with deliberate violence against non-combatants.
