The Sullivan Expedition was a sustained U.S. military campaign conducted from June to October 1779, directed against the four British-allied nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy). Commanded by General John Sullivan and involving a combined force roughly four times the size of the opposing Iroquois force, the campaign represented one of the Continental Army's largest offensive operations against Indigenous nations during the Revolutionary War. By targeting the British-allied Haudenosaunee, the United States sought to neutralize a significant threat on its western and northern frontiers while the broader war against Britain continued. The expedition's scale — with subordinate commanders including James Clinton, Edward Hand, Enoch Poor, William Maxwell, and Daniel Brodhead — reflected the strategic weight Washington's command placed on suppressing Iroquois military power as a prerequisite for securing the interior.
