Battle context
The Soviet intervention in Mongolia in 1921 extended the Russian Civil War's anti-White military operations into Central Asia, deploying Soviet and aligned Mongolian forces against the anti-communist administration of Baron Ungern. Soviet troops, requested by the Mongolian People's Party, occupied the entirety of Mongolia and defeated the White Russian-backed forces under Ungern and Rezukhin. The intervention directly produced the establishment of the Mongolian People's Republic, severing Mongolia's subordination to the Beiyang government of China and reorienting the country firmly under Soviet influence. In the broader context of the Russian Civil War, the campaign demonstrated the Bolshevik government's capacity to project force beyond the former imperial frontier and consolidate aligned revolutionary governments in neighboring territories, shaping the political boundaries and alignments of the region for decades.
