Sieges of Kolberg

Battle context

Kolberg, a Prussian-held town in Brandenburg-Prussian Pomerania, was the object of three successive Russian siege operations during the Seven Years' War. The first two attempts, including the late 1758 effort under Johann Palmenbach against Heinrich Sigismund von der Heyde's Prussian garrison, and a second operation from 26 August to 18 September 1760, both failed to reduce the town. A third and final siege, conducted from August to December 1761 with Swedish auxiliary support, succeeded where the earlier operations had not. The repeated Russian investment of Kolberg reflects the strategic value of the Baltic port to Russian operational ambitions in Pomerania during the broader conflict, and the eventual capture in 1761 represented a tangible territorial gain for Russia in the war's final years.
