Siege of the Sogdian Rock

Overview

The Sogdian Rock or Rock of Ariamazes, a fortress located north of Bactria in Sogdiana, ruled by Arimazes, was captured by the forces of Alexander the Great in the early spring of 327 BC as part of his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire.

Significance

The capture of the Sogdian Rock in early spring of 327 BC removed one of the remaining centers of resistance in Sogdiana as part of Alexander the Great's broader conquest of the Achaemenid Empire. The fortress, ruled by Arimazes and situated north of Bactria, represented the kind of fortified stronghold that prolonged Macedonian efforts to pacify the northeastern territories of the former Persian empire. Its fall contributed to the consolidation of Macedonian control over Sogdiana, a region that had proved among the most difficult to subdue in the entire campaign of conquest.
