The siege of the Alcázar was a symbolic Nationalist victory in Toledo during the opening stages of the Spanish Civil War. A garrison of roughly 1,000 Nationalist-aligned military personnel held the Alcázar fortress against approximately 8,000 Republican besiegers drawn from Popular Front militias. The siege lasted from late July until late September 1936, when the Army of Africa under Francisco Franco broke through to relieve the garrison. The successful relief carried outsized propaganda value for the Nationalist cause, demonstrating the capacity of Franco's forces to reach isolated holdouts deep in Republican-controlled territory and reinforcing the Nationalist narrative of resistance against superior numbers.
