Significance

The siege of Strasbourg concluded with the French surrender of the fortress on 28 September 1870, removing a significant fortified position from French control during the Franco-Prussian War. The North German Confederation, under August von Werder, committed 40,000 troops to reduce the garrison held by Jean-Jacques Uhrich with 23,000 men. The fall of Strasbourg eliminated a potential rallying point on the Rhine and secured the Confederation's eastern flank as the broader campaign pressed deeper into France. French casualties amounted to the entirety of the garrison force, representing a total loss of the defending strength at the fortress.
