Significance
The Siege of Pskov, known in Russia as the Pskov Defense, took place during the final stage of the Livonian War and constituted one of the closing major operations of that conflict. Stephen Báthory, commanding a Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth force of 27,000 against a Russian garrison of 16,000 under Prince Ivan Shuisky, succeeded in blockading but not storming the city between August 1581 and February 1582. The failure to reduce Pskov by assault was strategically significant: it checked the Commonwealth's momentum at a moment when Russian capacity to resist had been severely eroded by years of war, and it left the city in Russian hands as negotiations concluded the conflict. The siege thus marks the point at which Polish–Lithuanian military pressure, despite its successes elsewhere in the war's final stage, reached its operational limit, with the blockade's partial success and the assault's failure shaping the terms on which the Livonian War came to an end in 1583.
