Significance

The Siege of Plevna was a pivotal engagement of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, fought by the combined forces of the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Romania against Ottoman defenders under Osman Pasha. After crossing the Danube at Svishtov, Russian forces had been advancing toward the Balkan Mountains with Constantinople as the ultimate objective, deliberately routing around the fortified Ottoman positions on the Black Sea coast. Plevna blocked this axis of advance: the city sat at a critical road intersection and had been fortified with a network of redoubts, making it a serious obstacle to the campaign's momentum. The engagement produced severe attrition on both sides — Russian and Romanian forces suffered approximately 50,000 casualties against an Ottoman force of 67,000, underscoring how costly the fortified position proved. The battle's outcome shaped the broader trajectory of the war and, by extension, Romania's path toward internationally recognized independence, as Romanian forces fought alongside Russian troops in a conflict that would formally establish the kingdom's sovereign standing.
