Siege of Negroponte

Overview

The siege of Negroponte was fought between the forces of the Ottoman Empire, led by Sultan Mehmed II in person, and the garrison of the Venetian colony of Negroponte (Chalcis), the capital of the Venetian possession of Euboea in Central Greece. The Ottoman sultan Mehmed II laid siege to the fortress at Negroponte. The siege lasted for almost a month, and, despite great Ottoman casualties, ended in the capture of the city and the island of Euboea by the Ottomans.

Significance

The Siege of Negroponte on July 19, 1470 was a major engagement of the First Ottoman–Venetian War, in which Ottoman forces under Mehmed II, Mahmud Pasha, Gedik Ahmed, and Rum Mehmed Pasha confronted a Venetian force commanded by Giacomo Loredan and Tomaso Schiavo. The recorded Venetian casualty figure of 6,000 indicates the scale of the contest. The engagement involved substantial forces on both sides, with the Ottoman army numbering 70,000 and the Venetian force 80,000.
