The Siege of Malta was fought between an Ottoman force of 35,000–40,000 troops and a Maltese and Hospitaller garrison of approximately 2,500 defenders under Jean Parisot de Valette, facing commanders including Dragut, Mustafa Pasha, and Piali Pasha on the Ottoman side. Ottoman casualties of 25,000–35,000 against a defending force of 2,500 indicate the exceptional cost of the operation, with the besieging army sustaining losses that approached or exceeded the total strength of the garrison many times over.
