Battle context
The Siege of Lucknow was one of the defining episodes of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, centering on the prolonged defense of the British Residency against rebel sepoy forces aligned with Oudh. The East India Company garrison, substantially outnumbered by Oudh forces, sustained 2,500 casualties over the course of the siege. Two successive relief attempts were required before the besieged defenders and civilians could be extracted; the Residency was evacuated and then abandoned rather than held. The siege thus ended without a straightforward British military victory on the ground, and its extended duration and high cost illustrated the scale of resistance the rebellion could sustain in a major provincial center. The outcome shaped the broader conduct of British operations in northern India during 1857–1858, requiring significant commitment of forces and commanders including Havelock, Outram, and Campbell across successive phases of relief.
