Battle context
The siege of Kőszeg in 1532 was a strategically consequential engagement within the Habsburg–Ottoman wars in Hungary, in which a drastically outnumbered defending force halted the advance of an Ottoman army of over 100,000 troops toward Vienna. The garrison under Croatian Captain Nikola Jurišić numbered fewer than 50 soldiers and approximately 700 Hungarian villagers, with no cannons and few guns, yet succeeded in preventing Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha from pressing forward. The defense of this small border fort denied the Ottoman command the momentum needed to continue its drive on the Habsburg capital, making Kőszeg a critical point of friction in the 1532 German campaign despite the overwhelming disparity in forces between the two sides.
