Significance

The siege of Daraa in April 2011 was a pivotal event in the Syrian revolution, directly transforming what had been a protest movement into an armed rebellion and, ultimately, a civil war. Daraa had been the center of unrest during Syria's Arab Spring demonstrations, and the Syrian Army's ten-day siege of the city marked a decisive escalation by the state against its own population.
