The Siege of Corinth resulted in the capture of Corinth, Mississippi by Federal forces under Major General Henry W. Halleck after a month-long operation lasting from late April to late May 1862. Corinth was a strategically significant rail junction, and its fall extended Union control deeper into the Western theater following the bloody engagement at Shiloh. Halleck's force of approximately 120,000 faced a Confederate garrison of around 65,000 under General P.G.T. Beauregard. With relatively low casualties on both sides, the operation secured a key logistical node for the Union without a pitched engagement, consolidating Federal gains in northern Mississippi.
