Battle context
Constantinople's position at the junction of Europe and Asia, controlling the Bosporus and linking the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea, gave the city exceptional strategic weight within the Fourth Crusade's operational context. As a node on the Silk Road, its possession carried both commercial and imperial significance that made it a target not only for external powers but, in the course of the Fourth Crusade, for the crusading forces themselves under Boniface I and Enrico Dandolo, facing a Byzantine garrison under Alexios III Angelos that outnumbered the crusader force. The siege formed a critical juncture in the Fourth Crusade, a campaign that had already diverted sharply from its original objectives before reaching this engagement.
