Battle context
The Siege of Chernihiv was part of the northern Ukraine offensive that opened on 24 February 2022 with the full-scale Russian invasion. Russian forces, numbering approximately 30,000, engaged a Ukrainian garrison of around 2,000 defenders in the city. The siege lasted until early April 2022, when Ukrainian authorities confirmed that Russian forces had withdrawn from Chernihiv Oblast on 4 April 2022. The Russian failure to secure Chernihiv was part of the broader collapse of the northern offensive, which also saw the withdrawal from Kyiv's environs, marking a significant strategic setback for Russian forces and effectively ending their attempt to advance through northern Ukraine.
