Battle context
The Siege of Charleston, fought between March 29 and May 12, 1780, stands as one of the worst American defeats of the Revolutionary War. Following the collapse of British northern strategy in late 1777 and the withdrawal from Philadelphia in 1778, British commanders redirected their operational focus toward the Southern Colonies. After approximately six weeks of siege, Major General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered the Charleston garrison to Sir Henry Clinton's forces. With 5,466 American casualties against a garrison of 6,577, the capitulation effectively eliminated a substantial portion of Continental and allied strength in the South. The loss deprived the American cause of a major port city and its defending army in a single engagement, opening the Southern theater to sustained British operations and establishing a forward position from which Cornwallis would subsequently pursue his Carolina campaign.
