Battle context

The Siege of Belgrade on 30 July 1688 was a significant Habsburg offensive operation within the Great Turkish War, resulting in a Habsburg force of 34,000 — commanded by Maximilian II and including Eugene of Savoy and Jovan Monasterlija — engaging an Ottoman garrison and relief force estimated at 25,000–30,000 under Yeğen Osman Pasha. Habsburg casualties of 4,000 against Ottoman losses of 5,000 indicate a hard-fought engagement despite the numerical advantage held by the attackers. Belgrade occupied a strategically critical position controlling access between the Danube and Sava river systems, making its capture a principal objective of the Habsburg advance deep into Ottoman-held territory during this phase of the war.
