The Siege of Belfort lasted 103 days, during which the French garrison under Denfert-Rochereau resisted a Prussian force of 26,000 with roughly 18,000 defenders. French casualties reached 4,800 against 2,200 for the North German Confederation, yet the garrison was never broken by assault. The city held until the January 1871 armistice between France and the German Empire compelled French forces to withdraw in February 1871. The protracted resistance made Belfort a symbol of French defiance in a war otherwise marked by rapid Prussian strategic success. The eventual surrender came by diplomatic obligation rather than military defeat, a distinction that shaped how the siege was remembered in the aftermath of the conflict.
