The Second Battle of Wissembourg, fought from 26 to 29 December 1793, resulted in the French Republican forces under Hoche compelling a Coalition army of Austrians, Prussians, Bavarians, and Hessians to withdraw across the Rhine to its east bank. The engagement included significant subsidiary actions at Wœrth and Geisberg and represented a reversal of Coalition pressure on the French position in the region. Within the War of the First Coalition, the outcome secured the French hold on the left bank of the Rhine and demonstrated that the Republic's armies, despite fighting a multinational alliance commanded by experienced officers including the Duke of Brunswick and Wurmser, could mount effective offensive operations to reclaim contested ground.
