The Second Battle of Tuyutí, fought on 3 November 1867, saw a Paraguayan force of 8,000–9,000 men engage a smaller allied Brazilian-Argentine force of approximately 4,500 under Marques de Sousa. Despite their numerical advantage, the Paraguayans suffered 2,889 casualties and were defeated. The engagement underscored the persistent inability of Paraguayan forces under commanders such as Vicente Barrios to convert superior numbers into battlefield success against the allied coalition, a pattern that accelerated the attrition of Paraguay's finite manpower reserves as the war moved toward its final stages.
