Second Battle of the Java Sea

Overview

The Second Battle of the Java Sea was the last naval action of the Netherlands East Indies campaign, of 1941–42. It occurred on 1 March 1942, two days after the first Battle of the Java Sea. It saw the end of the last Allied warships operating in the waters around Java, allowing Japanese forces to complete their conquest of the Dutch East Indies unhindered.

Significance

The Second Battle of the Java Sea concluded the Netherlands East Indies campaign by destroying the last Allied warships operating in the waters around Java. Fought two days after the first Battle of the Java Sea, it eliminated any remaining naval capacity to contest the Japanese advance. With Allied surface forces gone, Japanese forces were free to complete their conquest of the Dutch East Indies unhindered. The battle thus removed the final obstacle to Japanese maritime control of the region, consolidating the rapid territorial gains that had defined the opening months of the Pacific war. United States Navy casualties reached 800, reflecting the scale of the defeat.
