Battle context
The Second Battle of Tembien, fought on the northern front of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War, resulted in a decisive defeat of Ethiopian forces under Ras Kassa and Ras Seyoum, with Ethiopian casualties reaching approximately 8,000 against an Italian force of 70,000. The engagement formed part of Marshal Badoglio's systematic offensive operations that progressively dismantled organized Ethiopian resistance in the north. The battle is particularly notable for the large-scale Italian deployment of mustard gas, which played a material role in the outcome and reflected a broader Italian willingness to employ chemical weapons in violation of international conventions. This pattern of chemical warfare, repeated across the northern front, degraded Ethiopian fighting capacity in ways that conventional force disparities alone cannot fully account for, accelerating the collapse of Ethiopian military cohesion in the months before Addis Ababa fell.
