Battle context
The Second Battle of St Albans was fought on 17 February 1461 at St Albans, Hertfordshire, during the Wars of the Roses. The Lancastrian force, numbering 15,000 under the Duke of Somerset, Earl of Northumberland, Baron Clifford, and Andrew Trollope, faced a Yorkist army of 10,000 commanded by the Earl of Warwick, the Duke of Norfolk, and Baron Montagu. Lancastrian casualties stood at 1,916. The engagement took place at a moment of acute pressure in the conflict, with the contest for control of England between the houses of Lancaster and York still unresolved following earlier fighting in the same town at the First Battle of St Albans in 1455.
