Battle context

The Vendéan seizure of Noirmoutier, an island in the Bay of Bourgneuf connected to the mainland by the Gois causeway, alarmed the Committee of Public Safety primarily because of the island's potential as a point of contact with Britain. Republican authorities feared British intervention on behalf of the royalist insurgency, a concern that shaped the strategic weight assigned to the loss of the island beyond its immediate military value. Charette's forces, numbering around 3,000, inflicted between 200 and 800 casualties on the Republican garrison under Wieland in securing the position. However, Charette's follow-through was limited: he did not dispatch a schooner to open communication with the British government until December 1793, and received no reply for several months, meaning the strategic opportunity the island represented went unrealized in the short term.
