Battle context

The Second Battle of Fort Sumter, fought in Charleston Harbor on September 8, 1863, demonstrated the limits of Union bombardment as a tool for retaking Confederate-held fortifications. Major General Quincy Gillmore's artillery had reduced the fort to rubble from batteries on Morris Island, yet the position remained in Confederate hands. General Beauregard's decision to replace the artillery garrison with infantry proved decisive: the infantrymen repulsed the Union naval landing party despite the fort's physical destruction. The engagement underscored that sustained gunfire could neutralize a fortification's offensive capacity without forcing its surrender, and that rubble itself could serve as defensible ground. Fort Sumter's continued display of the Confederate flag after the assault carried symbolic weight disproportionate to the fort's military utility, reinforcing Confederate control of Charleston Harbor against Union pressure.
