The Second Battle of Accra, associated with the Katamanso War and the Battle of Dodowa, marked a significant check on Ashanti expansion toward the Gold Coast littoral. A British-led coalition assembled from several coastal and inland peoples — including the Fante, Ga, Akyem, and Ada — confronted an Ashanti force under Osei Yaw Akoto that substantially outnumbered the allied side. The engagement resulted in roughly 6,000 Ashanti casualties, a toll that curtailed the empire's ability to dominate the coast and its trade networks. The battle is catalogued among the Anglo-Ashanti Wars in records held at the National Archives, reflecting British institutional involvement in organizing African allies against Ashanti pressure. By preventing Ashanti consolidation over the coastal zone, the outcome reinforced British influence along the Gold Coast and demonstrated the strategic value of coalition-building among peoples who shared an interest in resisting Ashanti hegemony.
