Revolt of the Batavi

Overview

The Revolt of the Batavi took place in the Roman province of Germania Inferior between AD 69 and 70. It was an uprising against the Roman Empire started by the Batavi, a small but militarily powerful Germanic tribe that inhabited Batavia, on the delta of the river Rhine. They were soon joined by the Celtic tribes from Gallia Belgica and some Germanic tribes.

Significance

The Revolt of the Batavi erupted in the Roman province of Germania Inferior between AD 69 and 70, during the political instability of the Year of the Four Emperors. The uprising was initiated by the Batavi, a small but militarily significant Germanic tribe inhabiting Batavia on the Rhine delta, whose soldiers had long served in Roman auxiliary formations and brought considerable military capability to the rebellion. The revolt drew in additional forces as Celtic tribes from Gallia Belgica and Germanic tribes joined the Batavi, broadening the challenge to Roman authority across the frontier zone. Roman casualties recorded at between 10,000 and 20,000 reflect the severity of the fighting and the difficulty experienced by Roman commanders including Marcus Hordeonius Flaccus, Munius Lupercus, and Quintus Petillius Cerialis in suppressing the insurgency. The revolt demonstrated how the fracturing of central imperial authority during the civil wars of 69 could be exploited by subject peoples with intimate knowledge of Roman military methods, and how the integration of provincial peoples into Roman auxiliary forces created potential adversaries capable of operating effectively against the legions.
