Raid on Bergama

Overview

The Battle of Bergama was fought at and near Bergama between the Greek army and forces of the nascent Turkish National Movement during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919–1922. The Turkish forces pushed the Greek army from Bergama on 15 June, but the town was recaptured on 22 June.

Significance

The engagement at Bergama occurred in the opening weeks of the Greco-Turkish War, during a period when Greek forces were consolidating their position in western Anatolia and Turkish nationalist forces were beginning to coalesce in opposition. Turkish forces succeeded in pushing Greek troops out of Bergama on 15 June, representing an early demonstration of the nascent Turkish National Movement's capacity to contest Greek advances. The Greek recapture of the town on 22 June restored the position, but the brief loss underscored that Greek control of the interior was not assured and that organized Turkish resistance was taking shape from the outset of the campaign.
