Battle context
The Prague offensive was the last major military operation of World War II in Europe, conducted on the Eastern Front from 6 to 11 May 1945. It ran concurrently with the Prague uprising and significantly contributed to the liberation of Czechoslovakia. Notably, the offensive continued even after Nazi Germany's unconditional capitulation on 8/9 May, making it one of the few engagements in the European theater to extend beyond the formal German surrender. The scale of the engagement is reflected in the force disparity: Allied forces numbered over 1.7 million against an Axis strength of 600,000–650,000, with Axis casualties recorded at 860,000 against Allied losses of approximately 49,000. The operation brought the European war to its operational close and completed the military liberation of Czechoslovakia.
