Operation Zitronella was a German naval and amphibious raid on Spitzbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago, representing one of the few offensive actions undertaken by the battleships Tirpitz and Scharnhorst during the war. The operation targeted Allied-occupied settlements in Isfjorden, neutralizing a Norwegian presence on the archipelago. Six Norwegians were killed and 31 taken prisoner, while the Germans sustained 16 wounded, one fatally. The raid demonstrated Germany's capacity to project naval power into Arctic waters and deny the Allies uncontested use of Svalbard's strategic position, though its broader effect on the course of the war in the north was limited.
