Operation Veritable was the northern arm of an Allied pincer movement executed in the final stages of World War II, running from 8 February to 11 March 1945. Conducted by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery's 21st Army Group, the operation committed roughly 200,000 Allied troops—drawn from the First Canadian Army under Lieutenant-General Harry Crerar and British XXX Corps under Lieutenant-General Brian Horrocks—against approximately 90,000 German defenders under Alfred Schlemm. The disparity in casualties, with Allied forces sustaining over 15,000 against more than 44,000 German losses, reflects the intensity of the fighting as Allied forces pressed through the northern sector. As part of a coordinated pincer, Veritable was designed to clear German forces west of the Rhine, advancing the broader Allied campaign to breach that final major natural barrier before the German interior.
