Operation True Promise marked the first direct military strike by Iran against Israel since the beginning of their proxy conflict, representing a significant escalation in a confrontation that had previously been conducted through intermediaries. The IRGC, coordinating with Hezbollah, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, and the Houthis, launched the attack explicitly as retaliation for the Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus on 1 April 2024, which killed two Iranian generals. By striking Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights directly rather than through proxy forces alone, Iran crossed a threshold that altered the established pattern of the conflict. The operation was also understood as a spillover of the Gaza war, linking the broader regional mobilization of Iran-aligned forces to the direct Iran–Israel dimension of the conflict. Israel recorded 130 casualties from the attack.
