BATTLE // May 25, 1971

Operation Searchlight

Overview

Operation Searchlight was a military operation carried out by the Pakistan Army in an effort to curb the Bengali nationalist movement in former East Pakistan in March 1971. Pakistan retroactively justified the operation on the basis of anti-Bihari violence carried out en masse by the Bengalis earlier that month. Ordered by the central government in West Pakistan, the original plans envisioned taking control of all of East Pakistan's major cities on 26 March, and then eliminating all Bengali opposition, whether political or military within the following month.

Significance

Operation Searchlight was the Pakistan Army's primary instrument for suppressing the Bengali nationalist movement in East Pakistan, marking the opening phase of what became the Bangladesh Liberation War. Ordered by the central government in West Pakistan and commanded by a senior Pakistani officer corps including Yahya Khan and Tikka Khan, the operation aimed to seize all major cities of East Pakistan by 26 March and eliminate organized Bengali political and military resistance within a month. The scale of force applied—18,000 Pakistani troops against a nascent Bengali armed presence—and the casualty figures of roughly 10,000 on the Bengali side underscore the violence of the crackdown. Rather than extinguishing resistance, the operation catalyzed the formation of the Provisional Government of Bangladesh under Tajuddin Ahmad and the Mukti Bahini forces under M. A. G. Osmani, consolidating Bengali opposition and setting the conditions for a protracted liberation conflict that ultimately drew in India and ended with the creation of an independent Bangladesh.
