Battle context
The Argentine amphibious assault on the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982, code-named Operation Rosario, directly precipitated the Falklands War. The operation brought approximately 600 Argentine troops ashore and culminated in the surrender of Falkland Government House, completing Argentine seizure of the islands. The invasion triggered a British military response under Margaret Thatcher's government, transforming what Argentina had calculated as a fait accompli into a full shooting war in the South Atlantic. Because the decisive fighting centered on Government House, the engagement is also referred to as the Battle of Government House.
