Battle context

Operation Pleshet was conducted on the Israeli southern front during the opening phase of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, targeting the village of Isdud as a means of halting the Egyptian Army's northward advance. The Egyptian force, roughly double the size of the Israeli force engaged, represented a significant threat to Israeli territorial consolidation in the south. By contesting Isdud, Israeli commanders sought to check momentum that, if unchecked, could have carried Egyptian forces deeper into Israeli-held territory. The operation's historiographical scope, encompassing engagements from May 29 through June 3, reflects how the fighting around Isdud was understood as a continuous strategic effort rather than a discrete action, underlining its role as a sustained defensive-offensive effort on a critical front.
