Operation Nachshon

Overview

Operation Nachshon was a military operation of the Haganah during the 1947–1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine and part of Plan Dalet. Its objective was to open the Tel Aviv – Jerusalem road blockaded by Palestinian Arabs, and furnish arms and supplies to the besieged Jewish community of Jerusalem. The operation was also known as "The operation to take control of the Jerusalem road," following which participating units later broke off to form the Harel Brigade. Following attempts to take control of the road to Jerusalem were unsuccessful and led to the construction of a makeshift bypass—Burma Road.

Significance

Operation Nachshon was the Haganah's first large-scale operation under Plan Dalet, aimed at breaking the Arab blockade of the Tel Aviv–Jerusalem road and resupplying the besieged Jewish community of Jerusalem. The operation failed to secure permanent control of the road, and subsequent efforts to hold the route also proved unsuccessful, ultimately forcing the construction of a makeshift bypass known as the Burma Road. Despite not achieving its primary objective, Nachshon had lasting organizational consequences: the units that participated later broke off to form the Harel Brigade, a formation that would play a significant role in the wider conflict. The operation illustrated the strategic centrality of the Jerusalem corridor during the civil war, where control of supply routes directly determined the viability of the city's Jewish population.
