Operation Minsk

Battle context

Operation Mińsk resulted in the capture of Minsk from the Red Army in August 1919, a significant territorial gain in the opening phase of the Polish–Soviet War. By seizing Minsk and subsequently Barysaw and Babruysk by the end of August, Polish forces advanced deep into Russian-controlled Lithuania and Belarus, presenting the Bolsheviks with a military fait accompli that complicated Soviet strategic options in the region. Polish control over the railway lines proved decisive, denying the Red Army the ability to move reinforcements to contest the advance and enabling a rapid sequential seizure of key towns along the rail network.
