Battle context

Operation Medak Pocket was a Croatian Army offensive conducted between 9–17 September 1993 targeting a salient south of Gospić in the Lika region, then held by the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina. The operation, officially designated Operation Pocket-93 (Operacija Džep-93), represents one of the significant Croatian military actions of the Croatian War of Independence prior to the larger offensives of 1994–1995. By striking at a Krajina-controlled salient threatening the outskirts of Gospić, Croatian forces sought to reduce a forward position held by Serbian forces in south-central Croatia. The operation was commanded by a senior Croatian military leadership including Janko Bobetko, Mirko Norac, and Rahim Ademi, with a force of approximately 2,500 troops. The presence of UNPROFOR commander Mile Novaković among the listed commanders indicates international monitoring involvement, reflecting the broader UN peacekeeping context in which Croatian military operations of this period were conducted.
