Battle context
Operation Maslenica was a Croatian Army offensive launched in January 1993 aimed at retaking territory in northern Dalmatia and Lika held by Krajina Serb forces. The stated military objectives centered on pushing Serb forces back from the approaches to Zadar, Maslenica, and Karlobag in order to open a secure land route connecting Dalmatia with northern Croatia. The operation engaged roughly 10,000 Croatian troops against an estimated 8,500 Republic of Serbian Krajina forces. Although assessed as an undoubted net tactical success for Croatia, its strategic returns were characterized as only moderate. The UN Security Council condemned the operation, reflecting the international diplomatic complications that accompanied Croatian offensive action during the war's UN-monitored ceasefire period. The battle nonetheless represented a step in Croatia's broader effort to consolidate territorial control and logistical connectivity ahead of later, larger offensives in the conflict.
