Battle context

Operation Linebacker II was the final major U.S. military operation of the Vietnam War, conducted from 18 December to 29 December 1972. The campaign targeted military and industrial areas of North Vietnam, concentrating on Hanoi and Haiphong, and dropped more than 20,000 tons of ordnance over twelve days. It was the largest bombing campaign involving heavy bombers since World War II. At least 1,624 civilians were killed, and in Vietnam the operation became known as Điện Biên Phủ of the Sky — a designation invoking the 1954 defeat that ended French colonial rule, framing the bombings as another instance of foreign air power failing to break Vietnamese resistance. The campaign's place in the war's conclusion has remained contested: U.S. planners associated it with North Vietnam's return to the Paris peace talks, while critics pointed to the civilian toll and the ultimate outcome of the conflict as evidence of its limited strategic effect.
